Again, space considerations required an item to not make my January column but I didn't want readers to miss out on it. So below is my coverage of a new "quirky" DVD on early English Folk Songs (complete with an old gramophone!). Steve Ramm – Recently arrived from Kultur Home Video is the DVD release of a TV show produced in the UK in 1997 by famed eccentric film director Ken Russell. It seems that Russell, who owns a horn gramophone (and has a dog named Nipper!) loves old records. In In Search of the English Folk Song, Russell lets the viewer follow him as he seeks to learn the origin of many songs incorporated by classical music composers like Vaughn Williams and Grainger. His journey - which begins with him playing a 78 for us - takes him to see some contemporary folk artists such as Fairport Convention and Donovan as well as singers in a local pub. A quirky – and fun - film but one getting little press in the US. (_www.kultur.com_ (http://www.kultur.com/) ). **************Start the year off right.
