An e-mail I received, can anyone help?

I have a Brunswick model 207 I purchased 1 year ago which has a spring motor problem. I am just now trying to get it in working condition. The first thing I noticed is when I wind it, the spring motor would wind and get tight, and the turntable would not turn. I check the governor and is spins freely. After taking tension off the spring and removing the spring barrel, the turntable main gear (the gear the spring motor gear engages with) will only allow me to turn it in one direction. And this turns the turntable counterclockwise instead of in a clockwise direction.

I proceeded to check the springs in both barrels and I believe they are wound in the correct way. After playing with it a bit trying a couple different ways the springs in the barrels only seem to work in on direction. They will only engage on the center shaft being assembled wound in a counterclockwise direction. The center shaft has a one way hook to engage with the spring, so it is nearly impossible to get it engaged if assembled in the opposite direction.

Even if the tension on the spring would go the other way, it will be turning the turntable in the wrong direction anyway.

I am a little puzzled here and a little help from you would be very helpful.
