Several years ago I bought #283 from Charley Hummel. Significantly, it did  
have a gear cover. As with early Homes, these were assembled out of sequential  
order and there's no clear cut-off point for certain features. I subsequently 
 sold that one but still have 803, admitted higher than your 500 level but 
still  very early. It has a gear cover as well, and is in near-mint original  
condition.
 
Number 4 is illustrated in Frow's book, the owner is not mentioned.
