I've been to Istanbul years ago, but did not see any phonographs. I do have one interesting story-------- About 25 years ago I was contacted by some people who had a Graphophone AT they wanted fixed. I went to see it, the upper casting was pot-metal, thoroughly warped. It turned out the man's family was Turkish, rather well-to-do, and they had had a house right on the Bosphorus. The family phono had made its way over to the US with all the Turkish cylinders in marked boxes. I offered to fix the AT in exchange for some of the records, but I think my description of having to junk the casting and replace it must have scared them away --- they didn't want to throw away something - ANYTHING- from the family. Never hard from them again.........
